Out with the old...

Posted by Ade on Monday, August 13th, 2007 at 9:04 PM

I have shuffled a few things around on my various servers. This page has moved up one machine (in the shelf, that is) to http://blog.adebaumann.com instead of http://biel.adebaumann.com/wordpress. If you're thinking “What's changed then?”… the whole site lives under that name now, not just the front page. Might I suggest you check out your atom-feeds as well? If this is the last post you see, you're on the old server and should change accordingly.

I am constantly amazed at what wonders the Irish can do when they set their minds to it. Especially if they assault me with what must be higher dimensional mathematics at the breakfast table. Now… if they could pull the same trick off with Guinness? Please? Alternatively, I would recommend they take a short course in applied mathematics.

Come on, that's obvious! For the average orange squash drinker, normal OJ just isn.t watery enough. Hence you want to add at least 750ml of water to the thing.

(Bleurgh, now I've disgusted myself. Sorry.)

Lake Biel the 3rd

Right. Everybody knows Lake Biel the 1st… It's the big, arrowhead shaped one that points towards the city. A few people even know Lake Biel the 2nd, also known as Manorsee. Even fewer, namely our neighbours and the motorists who drove through our street today, know about the 3rd. The name of our street was hardly ever as fitting as today: Seevorstadt! The pictures both show the road coming from our house from different sides, so I was glad I had come home just as the hailstorm started.

Eek! Everything okay at your little house on the prairie, though?

Ade Baumann said on Friday, July 20th, 2007 at 11:50 AM:

Thanks, everything's okay… our house is on slightly higher ground and didn't suffer any damage or flooding. Some of our courgettes got a bit mangled though, and there's a largeish collection of junk on our driveway where “Lake Biel III” had its temporary banks.

Lunch is near… therefore we shall take a quick detour into how to calculate volumes:

A given cylinder of radius z and height a, as shown in the photo, has a volume of

pi z z a

Eh… yes, I am a bit hungry as a matter of fact.

No mistake

Posted by Ade on Friday, July 13th, 2007 at 12:04 PM

Just back from a coffee-break… The coffee-machine-technician has left behind the repair-log for our essence-of-life-dispenser. Had a quick browse through it and found an entry which made me laugh out loud:

Takes money, doesn't give out coffee. No mistake found.

Depends whether you're on the money-taking or the coffee-drinking side of the coin-slot, I suppose…

Thaelmann Rebuff!
Thaelmann Rebuff!

Right — after a recent attempt at comment-spamming (as if I had any comment worth spamming…), I decided to put a captcha on the site. It's not just any captcha though, by using it commenters actually help digitise books. More about the principle and the technology behind it at their website.

Ignore me, just wanna try this out.

(Oops, does that already qualify as spamming?)

Ade Baumann said on Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 at 2:21 PM:

Consider yourself dutifully ignored.

And since you solved the captcha, your post does not qualify as spamming. Thank you, by the way, for testing the system — I haven't even tested it myself…

Deplastification of the Enfield

I made the mistake of entering “Royal Enfield” into eBay at some stage… here's some of the results:

First, we have the ignition cap. Original (on the left) looks like chrome, but it's actually only chromed plastic. What you can't see on this picture is that some of the chrome at the bottom of the cap had started to flake off as there is usually some oil in and around the ignition. The new cap (right) is polished aluminium with a dark red enamelled logo. (And yes, that is rust on the cylinder fins. Need to get a heatproof rust-covering paint…)

Next we have the tappet cover on the other side of the bike. Well… that wasn't strictly plastic (this part gets quite hot), but since the guy on eBay had a nice version matching my new ignition cap… Hey, works for me.

And finally… destickerisation of the toolbox. Well, I found out the stickers are almost impossible to remove without taking the paint off as well, so I just painted over them. Drilling holes was a bitch, as the metal used for the toolboxes was probably designed to withstand a hand-grenade going off inside and as the brass badges are… well… not exactly Swiss-standard workmanship. A lot of filing and cursing ensued, but the result is worth it, methinks.

All I can say is: Holy Shit! I want one of those!

Update: for some reason, the video wouldn't load on my site. So I'll link to it instead.

So, what's "eMail" in Welsh?

Posted by Ade on Wednesday, May 30th, 2007 at 5:43 PM

While looking around for info to prove to management that our e-mail disclaimers are a waste of space, time and bandwidth, I came across the following gem:

Maer e-bost hwn yn hollol gyfrinachol ac mae ar gyfer defnydd y derbynnydd/derbynwyr yn unig. Ni ellir derbyn yr e-bost hwn fel archeb am nwyddau na gwasanaethau. Rhaid defnyddio ffurflen archebu swyddogol ar gyfer hynny. Safbwynt yr awdur yw cynnwys y neges hon; nid yw unrhyw ddaliadau a fynegir yma o reidrwydd yn cynrychioli rhai Urdd y Myfyrwyr Aberystwyth nac unrhyw gorff cysylltiedig. Os nad y chi ywr derbynnydd bwriadedig, yna maen bwysig eich bod yn sylweddoli bod unrhyw ddatgelu, copïo, dosbarthu neu ddefnyddior e-bost neu unrhyw atodiad yn gwbl waharddedig. Os yr ydych wedi derbyn yr e-bost hwn mewn camgymeriad, yna plîs rhowch wybod ar unwaith ir awdur. Maer troednodyn hwn hefyd yn cadarnhau fod y neges e-bost hon wedi cael ei harchwilio am firysau cyfrifiadurol gan wrthfeirws Sophos.

Ooh! Fancy that!
