Integrated Application Level... Cheese?

OSI Layer 8: Emmentaler!
OSI Layer 8: Emmentaler!

In my field of expertise, Radware is a widely known company who provides application delivery hardware.

On a recent trip to Germany to stock up on food not available at home, I found to my considerable surprise that they seem to have diversified. I suppose in this day and age, you get your money wherever you can…

Wiggle Mouse to ensure success

Posted by Ade on Monday, May 25th, 2009 at 2:18 PM

If the header of this post seems weird, check Microsoft's answer to problem XL97: Data Not Returned from Query Using ORACLE Data Source:

Between two resolution methods which at least sort of make sense, there's the following gem:

Method 2: Move Your Mouse Pointer

If you move your mouse pointer continuously while the data is being returned to Microsoft Excel, the query may not fail. Do not stop moving the mouse until all the data has been returned to Microsoft Excel.

NOTE: Depending on your query, it may take several minutes to return the results of your query to the worksheet.

In other news, Oracle users suffer significantly more RSI if they're also working with Excel.

Cafe negative-lookbehind-assertion?

Posted by Ade on Monday, May 18th, 2009 at 0:48 AM
use restaurant::parc::cafe;
use restaurant::parc::cafe;

Right. Let's start the renewed blogging with a small pseudo-psycho-test. These seem to be all the rage on certain unmentioned social networking sites.

Look at the picture attached to this post. Which reaction is it most likely to produce in your brain?
  1. Ooh, a café. I think I'll go have a cuppa.
  2. That certainly is a large amount of punctuation
  3. Hold on a sec, this regex will never work.

If you chose number 3, I don't have to explain anything. If you didn't, you wouldn't understand even if I did. If you say “What? There's no negative lookbehind assertion in this regex”, you'd be absolutely right, of course.

Travel required!
Travel required!

Although I am fortunate enough not to be looking for a job anymore, an interesting opening was pointed out to me. Unfortunately, I don't fit the profile in several important factors (Not being USian, being less fit than your average portion of fish&chips… although I would just about still fit the age bracket). One thing struck me as a qualified linguistic pedant though: Who on earth (or, as the case may be, off earth) would want to apply for this job if frequent travel was not an option? I mean, these folks travel more in a single go than anybody else, for f's sake!

Is that the bus to RTXY_DG%;)FCKNGC?

Eh... where does this go
Eh... where does this go

Good thing I was flying out of Dublin Airport on August 3rd… taking the bus would have been slightly confusing. However, I find it hard to believe that the letters “FCKNG” should appear anywhere randomly, especially preceded by a smilie ;). Who knows… some bored sign technician, maybe?

Or a technician engaging in an abovementioned activity in insufficient distance to the keyboard?

Ehm. Maybe not.

That would account for the smiley, however…

No mistake

Posted by Ade on Friday, July 13th, 2007 at 12:04 PM

Just back from a coffee-break… The coffee-machine-technician has left behind the repair-log for our essence-of-life-dispenser. Had a quick browse through it and found an entry which made me laugh out loud:

Takes money, doesn't give out coffee. No mistake found.

Depends whether you're on the money-taking or the coffee-drinking side of the coin-slot, I suppose…

So, what's "eMail" in Welsh?

Posted by Ade on Wednesday, May 30th, 2007 at 5:43 PM

While looking around for info to prove to management that our e-mail disclaimers are a waste of space, time and bandwidth, I came across the following gem:

Maer e-bost hwn yn hollol gyfrinachol ac mae ar gyfer defnydd y derbynnydd/derbynwyr yn unig. Ni ellir derbyn yr e-bost hwn fel archeb am nwyddau na gwasanaethau. Rhaid defnyddio ffurflen archebu swyddogol ar gyfer hynny. Safbwynt yr awdur yw cynnwys y neges hon; nid yw unrhyw ddaliadau a fynegir yma o reidrwydd yn cynrychioli rhai Urdd y Myfyrwyr Aberystwyth nac unrhyw gorff cysylltiedig. Os nad y chi ywr derbynnydd bwriadedig, yna maen bwysig eich bod yn sylweddoli bod unrhyw ddatgelu, copïo, dosbarthu neu ddefnyddior e-bost neu unrhyw atodiad yn gwbl waharddedig. Os yr ydych wedi derbyn yr e-bost hwn mewn camgymeriad, yna plîs rhowch wybod ar unwaith ir awdur. Maer troednodyn hwn hefyd yn cadarnhau fod y neges e-bost hon wedi cael ei harchwilio am firysau cyfrifiadurol gan wrthfeirws Sophos.

Ooh! Fancy that!

I don't want to know...

Posted by Ade on Friday, October 13th, 2006 at 5:25 PM
No! Don
No! Don't!

Right, that's my last tour of duty in the Swiss army over and done with. I'm not going to lose more words than necessary on this: it was by far the worst I had, and that's with an adjusted idiocy-threshold.

One thing that did disturb me though ist a label I saw on a box we used to put up one of our antennas. What on earth is this used for… no… don't answer that. I honestly don't want to know.

You know it's Monday morning when you're driving into the sunrise and think “why does this idiot not turn down his headlights?”… Not that this would happen to me… erm…

Ban Cements Lead in UN Race

Posted by Ade on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006 at 3:41 PM

This sentence on my Google front page managed to confuse me until I read the corresponding article:

Ban cements lead in UN race

A couple of the weirder improbable interpretations going through my head at the time:

  • Certain glues are banned - and attain a favourable ranking - in an UN motorsport event?
  • Glue containing heavy metal is banned in an UN motorsport event?
  • Heavy metal is firmly established in an UN motorsport event due to some ban?

Need to stop here, head spinning. Having a closer look at the sentence, there's only two words (in and UN) that aren't ambiguous enough to confuse.
